Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent – Editor’s pick

There were a lot of reviews about how much SPACE you have in this family tent! Whether you’re a family of four or a family of eight, there is still enough room for everyone.

If you are looking for a fast and easy to put up, family tent then this is an excellent choice. The manufacturer claims the tent can be put up in one minute which is very fast for such a large tent. Perhaps you need a little practice to put it up in this record time. But it is still easy compared to the traditional poles. This is a bonus if you are putting up a tent and having to entertain small kids at the same time.  The large zippable mesh panels make it breathable in hot weather but still able to keep in the heat when it is cold. Colemans ”WeatherTec system” which consists of welded floors and inverted seams are a good feature to keep out the rain.

One of the best things about this is the space, although it is only one large room there is space to make a sleeping and living area for four people or the whole space will sleep seven to eight. The total size is 14 feet x 10 feet with 6-foot 5-inch centre height. This particular model is on the pricer side but this is reflected in the ease of set up and the size of this tent.

Pros

  • Quick to set up – about one minute.
  • Waterproof even in torrential downpours.
  • Spacious – enough room for two queen-sized airbeds and more.
  • Centre standing height is 6 feet 5 inches.

Cons

  • Not so quick and easy to take down.
  • Due to the build, it can easily break.

Final Verdict

The Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent is a shoe in for our best of list because of how easy it is to set up, how much room it offers, as well as the quality materials used to make it! This is the Editor’s Pick because it’s an amazing tent for the whole family.

Not recommended for people who don’t have the patience for a lengthy tear down and pack up. However, strongly recommended for campers trying to get the most space during their holiday!

This tent is great for short camping trips in the summer when the weather is warm. It is small and compact in a dome shape as the title might suggest and at the tallest point inside is around 4ft 11 and the dimensions are 9 feet x 7 feet. So the kids might be able to stand up but most adults won’t. Although marketed as a four-person tent, looking a little closer it can only accommodate one queen-sized mattress so it might be a bit of a squeeze. It is said to have the same Coleman ”WeatherTec system” which is meant to keep out the rain, but you’ll still need a tarp or ground sheet to protect the bottom.

The value for money is what really draws me to the Coleman Sundome tent, as it is a good quality brand at an incredibly low price. I think if you are planning on a few weekend camping trips and not doing any hardcore camping then it is a great choice.

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to transport.
  • Takes around ten to fifteen minutes to set up – easy colour coded poles.
  • The price is excellent value for money.

Cons

  • Not great for cold weather.
  • Doesn’t come with a footprint so you will have to buy your own or use a tarp.

Final Verdict

The Coleman Sundome makes our list because of how great it works in bad weather. Additionally, it’s an excellent choice for people who like speedy set up and tear down!

Not recommended for campers who have four or more people! All in all, an amazing value for anyone hitting the camp sites!

Ozark Trail 10 Person Tent 3 Rooms – Best family tent for privacy

What Buyers Like

Lots of reviews about how much buyers loved having so much space. There were some customers who used the side doors on each end to make all three sections a sleeping area. While other customers loved that there was enough room for four people to sleep, AS WELL AS set up a living room style area in the middle!

The ten-person Ozark trail family cabin tent is a traditional style tent with a lot of space for a large family. There are potentially three rooms created by using the detachable dividers to convert the large space. This is an excellent feature, especially when you have a large family and want to get some privacy. There is also one center door and two side doors which give you the option of separate entrances, great if there are lots of people staying in the same tent. If there are less of you, you can leave it as one large space and this is large at  20 ft x 10 ft and a 78″ height. It will take two people to set up so it’s not quick and easy to put together, but once it is up it is sturdy enough.

The price is not too bad for the quality and size of the product. Very good value considering how many people can potentially fit and stay inside. It will also be long lasting too as the materials are durable, so worth the purchase is worth the money if you are planning lost of future camping trips.

Pros

  • The overall size is huge and even if you are six foot tall you can stand comfortably at the tallest point.
  • You can mix and match rooms with the dividers.
  • It can withstand very bad weather when waterproofed or with a rain fly cover.
  • Storage pockets are useful.

Cons

  • The actual tent is water resistant rather than waterproof so you need to use an additional rain fly for heavy rain.
  • It can be tricky to set up and take down.

Final Verdict

The Ozark Trail 10 Person family cabin tent makes our list because it has so many privacy options for a camping tent! You can choose to make the two outside tents rooms and the middle area a hang out room. Additionally, you can use all three sections as sleeping areas without having to cross through all of them to get out!

Not recommended for families who prefer sleeping in one area. Overall, an excellent tent for an excellent value!

Wenzel 8 Person Klondike Tent – Best family tent for living space

What Buyers Like

The reviews for this family tent were mostly about how SPACIOUS it is! Lots of buyers were happy with how the design allows for a separation between “living” and “storage” areas and the “sleeping” area.

There were a few customers who loved how easy the instructions were to follow for set up. Others really loved how the sleeping space was big enough for large air mattresses!

Another large tent that can accommodate a big family. This one, however, is more like a cabin and comes with the bonus feature of a porch or living area. The 6-foot 1-inch height is good for those who want a tent they can walk around in and the total area is 16 ft. x 11 ft. It takes quite a while to put together and you wouldn’t want to have to do it in bad weather. But once you’ve practiced I guess it will get easier and quicker.

The sleeping area can fit two queen mattresses comfortably. A good feature is the mesh roof two, mesh windows and the rear mesh which keeps the insects out and let the breeze in. I find that is quite important with a lot of people sleeping in the same place. The zips and edges are treated which makes the waterproofing that bit better and the rain cover keeps the worst of the weather out.

It is also good value for the size and quality of the product offering a two-room cabin type tent. Meaning you can create into a little home from home for a small family.

Pros

  • Cabin shape rather than a traditional tent meaning standing room throughout.
  • Spacious tent with separate porch/living area.
  • Useful storage pockets within the large room.

Cons

  • Quite heavy to carry around, not suitable for backpacking.
  • One large sleeping room lacks privacy.

Final Verdict

The Wenzel 8 Person Klondike Tent makes our list for most spacious living area. You can camp with a little more room for everyone!

Not recommended for families camping on a hiking, or backpacking trip, as this needs a settled camp site! A great tent for a roomy family camping trip!

A traditionally shaped dome tent which is big enough to fit three queen-sized mattresses at full capacity. The floor layout is 16 ft x 9 ft which gives plenty of space. But if you want living space as well, it would comfortably fit four to six people. This with space for storage and sitting too.  The door opens into the middle of the tent and the zip is located off the ground to prevent water from seeping in. The rain-fly is completely removable. This means in warmer weather you can enjoy the mesh windows and ceiling, letting in breeze and light. But you get good coverage during showers as long as the seams are up to scratch.

There are a few reports of defective seams but it appears customer services are good and you will get a replacement. But of course, that doesn’t help if you are caught in a rainstorm and your tent leaks. That being said, this tent is a good choice overall for a large tent with plenty of room and great if you want to an electric hookup.

The value for money is good especially when you factor in the number of persons it can sleep for the price. But you will need a few people to stay to put the tent up in the first place.

Pros

  • Large tent sleeping up to 9 people.
  • Has an electrical cord port for electric hookup.
  • Rain fly keeps the tent dry but breathable.
  • A suspended storage area for extra space.

Cons

  • If you are quite tall you won’t be able to stand up inside.
  • Due to the shape, the sides are considerably lower than the centre.
  • Takes more than one person to set up.

Final Verdict

The CORE 9 Person Extended Dome Tent is one our list for best family tent for electric connection because it adds a spark of glamour to your camping trip! Easily plug in any electric item you may need!

Not recommended for buyers looking for a tent that only needs one person to set up, because you most certainly need some help. All in all, a fantastic tent to stay plugged into the world while you’re immersed in nature!

Best family tent buying guide – all you need to know

There are a few different things you should consider when looking for the best family tent for you. Depending on your needs you may look at certain features more than others like when choosing a budget tent.  Here are some things you should think about before purchasing a tent.

How long does it take to set up and take down?

If you have small children and need to get your tent up and down in a hurry then you may want to choose an instant or quick to assemble tent. It means you can get sorted quickly. You don’t have to mess around entertaining the kids, especially if the weather is bad. These are more expensive however so you may want to consider time vs cost. You can pick up some bargains if you choose a more difficult to assemble tents. When considering the tent for you and a family, I think the most important factor is how you will set up and take down with kids in tow.

How much room do you need?

This is very different, depending on the size of your family and how much living space you want separate from your sleeping area. If you have a family of four, you might think that a four-person tent is all you need but you should do a bit more research. A four-person tent means there is enough room for a maximum of four people to sleep in. That means there’s no space for living room or storage. So that might not be the best family tent for you. If you have a large family and want somewhere to stay inside you have to think big. If you want space to relax separately to the sleeping area then you may want to consider a tent that is advertised as two more persons than the number who will be sleeping.

Is the tent waterproof or water resistant?

This is something you need to consider carefully. Weather is changeable wherever you are camping so you need to be sure you have all bases covered. If a tent is advertised as completely waterproof, with the included rain shield then you should have no problem with leaks. But in hot weather, waterproof tents can become hot and stuffy depending on the ventilation system.

So you have a choice whether to choose a waterproof, water resistant and a combination. Or you may have to purchase a separate rain cover/ or shield. This will make sure you are covered in torrential downpours. This element depending on how often you will be camping, how long and where you intend to camp. Choose a tent that will suit your travels and needs as a family.

How often will you be using the tent?

If you are only going to use your tent on a couple of occasions in good weather then you don’t want to spend a fortune. However, if you want a more versatile tent that you will get your use out of you might want to spend a bit more for the added extras. Be honest with yourself. If you are trying camping for the first time don’t spend a lot of money on a fancy tent.  But if you know you will be using the tent for seasons to come you may want to invest in a long lasting model.  Think about the future and decide what you want from a tent and how you travel as a family.

Best Family Tent -So Which Is The Best Option For You?

Of course, it is all about personal taste. But the research I have completed and the feedback from purchasers and users of the products I think that the best family tent is the Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent because of the ease of set up and the space it provides. Waterproofing is also essential. This is why I have chosen this as the best family tent in my opinion.

  1. I think family tent seeker will be benefited by reading this post for making the best choice of the tent. Thanks for sharing such this helpful review.

  2. Great tips on how to buy a family tent. I usually look first at whether or not its water proof because a wet night in a tent will cause what could have been a great family experience to become something else that is not so fun. Big thing to look for in a tent is if it has a full coverage rain fly. One that will cover the entire tent. Experience has taught me that going cheap on your tent is not such a great idea if you plan on doing much camping with the family.

  3. Taking the family camping I think is a great way to unplug from the work and connect as a family unit. One of the more stressful parts of camping is picking out the right tent. After all it’s home away from home. Thanks for the helpful ideas and tips.
